Kendamil is the British outlier in the European organic infant formula space. While HiPP, Holle, Lebenswert, Loulouka, and Jovie all use vegetable oil blends containing palm oil to deliver the palmitic acid that breast milk naturally provides, Kendamil takes a completely different approach: it uses whole milk fat. The palmitic acid comes from the milk itself, in its native triglyceride structure. This single formulation choice is the reason a growing number of parents specifically seek out Kendamil, and it's also what made Kendamil the first European infant formula to secure FDA enforcement discretion for direct US retail during the 2022 Abbott shortage.

The Kendamil story

Kendamil is made by Kendal Nutricare Ltd, headquartered in Kendal, Cumbria in northwest England. The company traces its manufacturing heritage to 1962 — originally a milk-processing operation serving the UK domestic market. In the 2010s, Kendal Nutricare pivoted into infant formula specifically, positioning Kendamil as a premium British alternative to continental European brands and to standard US formulas.

The whole-milk-fat approach wasn't a marketing gimmick, it was a deliberate nutritional decision based on research into the sn-2 palmitate question. See our sn-2 palmitate explainer and the broader palm oil explainer for the full context, but the short version is: palmitic acid at the sn-2 position on triglycerides is absorbed significantly better than palmitic acid at sn-1 or sn-3. In breast milk and in whole cow milk, palmitic acid is predominantly at sn-2. In vegetable oil blends (palm olein-based), palmitic acid sits predominantly at sn-1 and sn-3, which leads to calcium-palmitate soap formation in the gut and firmer stools. Kendamil's whole-milk-fat approach bypasses this issue entirely.

Kendamil's product range

Three main lines:

  • Classic, the original, non-organic baseline. Whole milk fat, no palm oil, full nutrient fortification compliant with EU 2016/127.
  • Organic, certified organic version of Classic. UK Soil Association Organic and EU Organic. Same whole-milk-fat approach.
  • Goat, goat-milk variant. UK-sourced goat milk from Red Tractor farms.

Each line covers Stage 1 (0–6 months), Stage 2 (6–12 months), and Stage 3 (12+ months), not all stages covered for every line.

Comparison vs HiPP and Holle

For parents weighing the three major European organic brands:

  • vs HiPP. HiPP uses vegetable oil blends including palm oil and fortifies with Metafolin for bioavailable folate, plus GOS prebiotic and Limosilactobacillus fermentum hereditum probiotic. Kendamil uses whole milk fat (no palm oil) but folic acid rather than Metafolin, and does not add probiotics in standard lines. HiPP is stronger on folate form and prebiotic coverage; Kendamil is stronger on palm-oil avoidance and natural fat structure.
  • vs Holle. Holle leads on Demeter biodynamic certification and offers the widest range of stages and variants (cow, goat, A2). Kendamil leads on the whole-milk-fat approach and has more direct US retail access. Both use folic acid (not Metafolin).

Each brand wins on different axes. Parents choose based on which axis matters most for their specific baby and priorities.

US market posture

Kendamil is the European brand most integrated with US retail:

  • FDA enforcement discretion was granted during the 2022 Abbott formula shortage, allowing direct import and US retail sale under temporary authority.
  • Target retail distribution has been maintained post-shortage for select Kendamil SKUs.
  • Organic's Best Shop also carries Kendamil alongside its other European imports.
  • The FDA has not yet granted Kendamil permanent full US registration, but the enforcement discretion pathway has been renewed multiple times.

This is noticeably different from HiPP and Holle, which remain personal-import only. Kendamil's US availability is broader and less dependent on a single reseller.

Manufacturing and certifications

  • UK-based production in Kendal, Cumbria. Milk sourced from local UK dairy farms.
  • EU Organic (Regulation 2018/848) on the Organic line.
  • UK Soil Association Organic, the UK's highest organic standard.
  • Non-GMO Project Verified: US-recognized non-GMO certification.
  • Red Tractor: UK farm assurance scheme covering animal welfare and environmental standards.
  • EU Infant Formula Compliance (Regulation 2016/127) on all stages.

Recall history

Kendamil has a clean recall record as of April 2026, no recalls affecting US-distributed SKUs. The Atlas recall timeline (Phase II) will track any future events.

My take on Kendamil for parents

Kendamil is the brand I specifically recommend when the parent wants to avoid palm oil entirely, or when stool consistency has been an issue on a standard-palm-oil formula. The whole-milk-fat approach genuinely changes the fat biochemistry in the gut, and for some babies it makes a visible difference.

The trade-offs to be aware of:

  • No Metafolin. Kendamil uses folic acid. If MTHFR optimization is a priority, HiPP is the better fit.
  • No GOS and FOS prebiotics in standard lines. Kendamil relies on the milk's natural composition rather than added prebiotics.
  • Higher price point than Holle Classic, roughly comparable to HiPP Dutch.
  • More available at US retail than either HiPP or Holle, which is a practical convenience for parents who can't commit to the import-subscription model.

FAQ

Is Kendamil FDA-approved for sale in the US?
Kendamil has partial US retail presence under FDA enforcement discretion since the 2022 infant formula shortage, it is the only European brand with broad shelf availability at Target and select other US retailers. It is not FDA-registered under 21 CFR 107 in the same way US-domestic brands are, but the FDA has explicitly permitted Kendamil's US retail distribution on an ongoing basis.
Why does Kendamil use whole milk fat instead of vegetable oils?
Whole milk fat preserves native milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) structure that vegetable-oil blends lack. MFGM contains phospholipids and glycoproteins with emerging evidence for cognitive and immune benefit. Kendamil was the first EU-wide brand to make whole-milk fat the centerpiece of its composition; Serenity Kids and Baby's Only Premium A2 are the US-domestic formulas with similar positioning.
How is Kendamil different from HiPP and Holle?
Kendamil's central differentiator is whole-milk fat instead of vegetable oil blend: HiPP and Holle both use palm-oil-containing vegetable blends. Kendamil Classic is non-organic (UK Red Tractor farming standards); Kendamil Organic matches HiPP/Holle on certification. Kendamil is the only EU brand with partial US retail presence at scale. Pricing sits above HiPP and Holle per ounce for US buyers.
Is Kendamil Goat Stage 1 palm-oil-free?
Yes. The Kendamil Goat line uses whole goat milk fat plus organic coconut, sunflower, and rapeseed oils, no palm oil. This makes Kendamil Goat one of very few infant formulas simultaneously palm-oil-free and goat-milk-based. It is suitable for families who want both preferences in one product. Goat milk is not hypoallergenic and is not indicated for diagnosed CMPA.
Does Kendamil contain DHA and ARA?
Yes, all Kendamil Stage 1 formulas include DHA (from algal oil, vegetarian source) and ARA. DHA content is approximately 14 mg per 100 ml prepared, complying with EU Regulation 2016/127 which mandates DHA presence in Stage 1. The algal DHA source is a differentiator from fish-oil DHA used in some US formulas; Kendamil is appropriate for families preferring vegetarian DHA sources.
Where can parents buy Kendamil?
Primary channels: Target stores and Target.com (Kendamil Classic and Organic, sometimes Goat), Kendamil's own US website (kendamilusa.com), Organic's Best Shop, and Amazon with verified sellers. Availability fluctuates by geography and demand. For Kendamil Goat specifically, Organic's Best has the most consistent inventory. Avoid unknown Amazon third-party sellers to ensure authenticity and date integrity.
What is the difference between Kendamil Classic and Kendamil Organic?
Kendamil Classic uses UK Red Tractor certified farming standards (rigorous animal welfare and traceability but not organic certification). Kendamil Organic carries EU Organic certification (Regulation 2018/848). Composition is nearly identical; the difference is solely in farming practices and certification fees, which reflect in the price. Classic is typically 20-30% cheaper than Organic per ounce.
